A labor union is a group of workers who join together to stand up for their rights at work. When drivers form a union, they can negotiate with the app companies about things like pay, benefits, safety, and training from a position of strength. Unions also make sure that managers treat workers fairly. Unions work democratically, meaning our leaders are chosen by the members.
Collective bargaining is the process of bargaining for agreements between companies and a group of workers on salaries, working conditions, benefits, and other rights. Workers are typically represented by their labor unions. The collective bargaining agreement that the union and the companies agree to serves as a contract covering wages, working hours, paid time off, expenses, health and safety, overtime, grievance procedures, and more.
You won’t be asked to pay any dues to the App Drivers Union until you win your contract. Member dues are voluntary. The App Drivers Union is your union. Unions that have strong member participation have the most power to negotiate fair contracts. We know that app companies are making more profit than ever and growing more powerful because of our hard work. We have to build a strong union so that Uber and Lyft respect us and pay us for driving their success. The more members that contribute to the union, the more power we will have with the app companies to win a good contract and enforce it.
Any Massachusetts Uber and Lyft driver working a minimum number of required hours can join the union, regardless of immigration status and length of service.
No, drivers will not become employees and will keep our flexibility and independence.
